What is Subtext?
Subtext is a local interactive cross-media dating service. We have a live show that airs on TSTV in Austin, Texas every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10 pm to 12 am. TSTV can be seen on Antenna 9, Dorm 15 and Cable 16. TSTV is part of Texas Student Media.
What carriers are allowed to participate?
The service is available for Alltel, Boost, AT&T, Dobson, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and Virgin Mobile. Unfortunately, Dobson and Verizon users do not receive a 5-digit User-ID, and therefore cannot send or receive private messages, or register on the Subtext website.
What type of a phone do I need to be able to use the service?
You need a mobile phone with text messaging (SMS) capability to use the service.
What is a User-ID?
A unique 5-digit User-ID number is given to everyone who participates in our show (excluding Verizon and Dobson users). Your User-ID allows you to remain completely anonymous so your personal information remains secure. You can also send private messages to other users. To learn how to send a private message, see below.
What are the icons next to my user profile on the television show and what do they mean?
There are a number of different icons that could appear next to your User-ID.

How do I create my own profile?

What is my screen name when I login to the website?
Your screen name is the name you choose to be displayed to other users on your profile. Your mobile phone number is what you use to login to the website.
I forgot my password. How can I retrieve it? (PASSWORD)
To retrieve a forgotten password, text PASSWORD to 74714 (T-Mobile users text PASSWORD to 74715). You will receive a return message with your new password.
I just made a profile and logged in. What now?
Now you can complete your profile by filling out additional questions about your personality and interests and questions about who you're looking to meet. You can also add photos and videos to your profile.
How can I search for other users?
With Subtext you can search for users in a number of ways. You can search using a screen name or User-ID or you can perform a basic or advanced search. A basic search can only search for users based on their age, gender, orientation and location. An advanced search is more specific. You can perform an advanced search by clicking the link that says "ADVANCED SEARCH" that appears as a pull down menu on the left navigation of every page, once you have registered for an account.
Can I use this webpage without registering?
Yes. You may still search for other users and send them private messages.
What is the Block List?
The Block List is a page that lists the users that you have blocked from sending you messages. When you block someone it will also prevent them from appearing in your search results.
I just uploaded a new photo to my profile, but when we looked at my profile on my friend's computer the picture could not be seen. Why is this?
Before your photos are viewable by all users, they go through a moderation process. Pictures you upload will usually post within 24 hours.
Why can't I get my picture to be displayed on the television screen?
You need a picture taken by us at a Subtext event to have it displayed on screen. This picture also has to be selected as your TVPICTURE on your profile. To find out when our next event is, go to our Clubs page.
How can I prevent you from using a picture taken of me at an event on television?
If you don't want any of your photos displayed on television, do not select any photos in your profile as your TVPICTURE
What information am I allowed to give out in the fields where I can describe myself and the person I am looking for?
You can give any information with exception of your full name, address, phone number, email address, or any other material deemed inappropriate by our Terms of Use.
TOPLIST
What is the Toplist?
The Toplist features the Subtext users with the most profile views and the most private messages received.
How often is the Toplist updated?
The Toplist is updated every night at midnight.
What do the icons on the Toplist mean?
The icons indicate changes in rank on the Toplist.
I looked at someone's profile but there was no change in the amount of clicks on the Toplist page. Why is this?
The Toplist only updates once a day, at midnight, so the clicks will not be visible until then.
VIDEOS
What video formats can I upload?
Subtext supports the following file formats for video: AVI, MPEG, MOV, ASF, WMV, RM, and FLV files. The maximum video size is 15 MB.
Are videos moderated?
Yes, all uploaded videos are subject to moderation, which means your videos may not show up on the website if they do not comply with our Terms of Use.
Why was my video not published on the website?
All videos are subject to moderation. We reserve the right to choose which videos shall be included on the website.
PHOTOS
What photo formats can I upload?
Subtext supports the following file formats for photos: BMP, JPG, GIF, and PNG files. The maximum file size for photos is 2 MB.
Are photos moderated?
Yes, all uploaded photos are subject to moderation, which means your photos may not show up on the website if they do not comply with our Terms of Use.
Why was my photo not published on the website?
All photos are subject to moderation. We reserve the right to choose which photos shall be included on the website.
PRIVATE MESSAGES
Can my first message be a private message?
Yes.
Will my phone number be revealed if I send a private message?
No. Your contact information is not revealed until you decide to reveal it. Your message shows up in their phone coming from 74714, and includes only your User-ID.
Do private messages cost $0.25 as well?
Yes, every private message you send using the service costs $0.25 per message (plus standard messaging rates for your carrier).
Does it cost anything to receive private messages?
No. Receiving private messages is free of charge (excluding standard rates for your carrier).
Sending a private message (PRIVATE)
In order to message another user, send a text message to 74714, and in the body of your message, type PRIVATE (space) the recipient's User-ID number (space) and your message. Do not include the quotation marks.
Example: PRIVATE 12345 hey, do you have any pics?
* Dobson and Verizon users cannot send or receive private messages.
Can I send a private message even if I've never used the service?
Yes, you can send them a private message by texting PRIVATE (space) recipient's User-ID to 74714. You will be asked to opt in and you will receive a User-ID.
TEXT MESSAGING
How do I send a message to the show?
To send a message to the TV screen, send a text message to the phone number 74714 (no area code needed). You will receive a reply from us asking you to opt-in. Reply with the word YES and send that message to 74714. You will receive a second message with your unique 5-digit User-ID. Your first message will then be sent to our show, pass through our moderation team, and most likely appear onscreen. Message costs may vary, but single standard messages cost $0.25 each, plus standard rates for your carrier.
How do I send a highlighted message to the show? (HOT)
To send a highlighted message, text "HOT," a space and your message to 74714 ($0.50/message).
Can I get my photo on the show? (TVPICTURE)
Yes, to have your photo displayed on the show you must have a TVPICTURE uploaded to your online profile. A TVPICTURE is taken by Subtext at one of our events or video profile shoots. To view your TVPICTURE on the show, text "TVPICTURE (space) your User-ID" to 74714 ($0.50/message).
How do I stop using Subtext? (STOP)
To opt out of our service, text STOP to 74714. Your User-ID will be cleared, and you will no longer be able to send or receive messages. You may opt back into our service at any point in the future, but a new User-ID will be sent to you. Please note that ALL information on your profile will also be removed.

How can I get more information about a user via text message? (SMSPROFILE)
To get a user's profile information sent to your phone, text SMSPROFILE (space) their User-ID to 74714 ($0.25/message).
I forgot my password. How can I retrieve it? (PASSWORD)
To retrieve a forgotten password, text "PASSWORD" to 74714 ($0.25/message). T-Mobile users text PASSWORD to 74715.
How do I activate the account I am trying to register? (REGISTER)
When you click submit, you'll be asked to send a text message with the word REGISTER to 74714 (74715 for T-Mobile users) to confirm your registration. Once confirmed, you will receive a text message with your User-ID and password to login. Once you log in, your account will be activated. This service is available to Alltel, AT&T, Boost, Nextel, Sprint and T-mobile customers. At this time, Verizon and Dobson customers are not supported.
How do I sponsor my profile and get my sponsor photo on the home page? (PROMOTE)
To get your photo on the top banner of the Subtext homepage, text PROMOTE (space) User-ID to 74714 ($0.25/message). Select your sponsor photo in the "Manage Photos" section of your profile. Self-sponsored profiles last for one hour.
How do I use the Match Profile feature? (MATCH)
The match profile feature allows you to measure your compatibility with another user. To find out your match rating with a specific user, use their User-ID and text MATCH a space and their User-ID to 74714 ($0.25/message).
How can I search other profiles from my mobile phone? (SEARCH)
To search for specific characteristics in another user, text SEARCH followed by the age, sexual orientation, gender, and location of whom you're looking for. Send your message to 74714 ($0.25/message). You will receive a return message with the users whose profiles match your search.
Example: "SEARCH I am looking for a 22 year old straight woman in Austin."

OTHERS
Do I need a cell phone to send messages?
Yes. At the moment, SMS (Short Messaging Service) is the only method of sending messages.
How old do I have to be to participate on Subtext?
You must be 18 years or older to participate.
Why hasn't my message appeared on the screen?
There are many possible reasons.
- If you have not received a reply message thanking you for participating in Subtext, we have not received your message and you have not been charged. Due to the nature of text messaging, this happens on occasion.
- We reserve the right to modify and select which messages will appear onscreen. If your message is deemed offensive, it may be deleted in its entirety.
- Page breaks or signatures often cause problems in messages appearing onscreen. If possible, avoid using either.
- Messages may take several minutes to appear, depending on how many messages have been received.
If your message doesn't fit any of this criteria, text the word HELP to 74714, send us an e-mail at help@subtext.com or call us at 1-800-515-8332.
Are there any other fees required to participate?
No. Subscription services are available, but participating only requires the one-time fee for each message.
How will I be billed for participating?
All charges will appear on your monthly phone bill.
How do I become a guest on the show?
To become a guest on our show, send us an e-mail at guests@subtext.com. Be sure to include a photo and a little bit about yourself. We're seeking anyone who's looking for a date in Austin, or local talents including actors, filmmakers, musicians, artists, etc.
Is there a free method of participating in the show's contests?
Yes. E-Mail your contest entries to contest@subtext.com. Be sure to include your full name and a telephone number where you may be reached during the program.
How can I apply to be a host on Subtext?
To apply to become a host, please send an email with your photo and contact information to hosts@subtext.com.
Why haven't I received my contest prize yet?
Prizes usually take 2-3 weeks to arrive. If you won a prize over 21 days ago and have yet to receive it, you can check on the status of your shipment by calling 1-800-515-8332.
